Kobra and the Lotus is the brainchild of Kobra Paige, originally taking flight in 2009 and making another major evolutionary leap when guitarist, Jasio Kulakowski, joined in 2012. The Canadian four-piece has released their most ambitious project yet, a two part album entitled, Prevail I and II. The first album of the set, Prevail I , was released May 12th courtesy of Napalm Records. Frontwoman Kobra Paige states about this project: “When we are born, we are innocent, pure, and unshaped. This mandala signifies a human at the beginning of its journey. Unscathed and beautiful, the mandala is each and every one of us. As this album unfolds, you will notice it’s more than just music. Prevail I is a story of visceral truth and I believe, if we’re really being honest with ourselves, everyone will find their story within it. After all, the battles may differ, but we all started as the same mandala and we are more relatable than we’d like to admit. Our only wish is that you may enjoy the freaking crap out of this album and find comfort in realizing you’re not alone.”
Like any good salvo, Kobra and the Lotus launch an attack that is unrelenting, each track on Prevail I sells itself even more convincingly than the last. One particularly explosive track “Specimen X”, boasts insanely infectious vocals and djent-like riffs that will engrave their groove deep inside your mind. As you listen to Prevail I it is apparent that Kobra and the Lotus has found their groove and it shows in the unique way they blend elements of raw heavy metal, nu-metal, power metal, and more into a female-fronted, fighting machine. Tracks “You Don’t Know” and “Victim”, lyrically touch upon more personal, emotional topics but do so with a ferocity. These tracks make it clear that one can reveal vulnerabilities without appearing weak and do not have to be expressed by way of a ballad. The shredding throughout Prevail I, is a feral demonstration of the band’s technical ability; made completely obvious in the instrumental track “Check the Phyrg”.
From top to bottom Prevail I is crushing yet captivating, charismatic yet heavy; an all around brilliant display of metal. Double albums can be risky Kobra Paige and the boys rolled the dice and have clearly hit the jackpot, so snag a copy today!
