June 10th at the newly named Michigan Lottery Amphitheater at Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights, MI headliners Deftones and Rise Against were joined by Thrice, and Three Trapped Tigers on their month long tour. Freedom Hill was the second show of the tour, the first being in Rise Against’s hometown of Chicago, IL.
London, England instrumental noise-rockers Three Trapped Tigers kicked off the evening with their unique blend of experimental, electronic, math rock. Warming up the crowd for post-hardcore/alternative rockers Thrice.
Californians Thrice known for their philanthropy; historically giving a portion of their album proceeds to charitable organizations supporting families and underprivileged youth. After a three year hiatus and members partaking in other musical projects (Riley Breckenridge with Puig Destroyer and Eddie Breckenridge with Angels & Airwaves), the band reunited (early 2015). They released their latest album To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere on May 27, 2016. When Thrice took the stage it was clear why and how they were able to jump right back into spotlight on major festivals when they reunited; they were flawless. Vocalist and rhythm guitarist Dustin Kensrue’s voice is absolutely gorgeous in the most masculine way. His delivery meaningful and emotional. As they performed their single “Blood on the Sand”, the crowd sang along, Kensrue crooned, his delivery extremely powerful. Their performance was so good that I immediately downloaded their entire catalog when we got home. If Thrice’s performance wasn’t enough, the Windy City’s Rise Against was up to bat.
Rise Against released their 8th album, Wolves, the day before the show and the fans were extremely excited when they performed a few songs off the new album. Just as the sun set vocalist Tim McIlrath slowed things down for a moment of reflection, asking the audience in a calm sincere voice not to ignore or close their eyes to what is happening in the world around them, speak out and remain aware, so they can inspire change.
Deftones were last up for the evening, taking the stage just after dark. Vocalist Chino Moreno took the stage and every person in the amphitheater started moving. The fans in the pit jumping, those in seats standing, and even the lawn on their toes; no one wanting to miss a moment. Moreno’s energy is seemingly unlimited, running from side to side all while maintaining his awesome whine and cries (some would call them screams). Deftones is the go to band when you want to chill or you want to cry (but not Dashboard Confessional cry) but when you see them live, that calm does not exist, nor the urge to cry. There is electricity in the air with every song increasing the amperage. Deftones did not disappoint, nor could they.
It is expected that Deftones and Rise Against perform amazingly, they are the headliners of the tour but in all honesty, Thrice were the stars of the night. They were unbelievable.
