CARDIANT – MIRRORS (Inverse records)
Looking at the album cover, you’d never suspect that Finland’s Cardiant would sound like anything but Green Jelly (Jello?). I like being surprised like that.
In fact, these guys don’t sound anything like that at all! If I had to narrow it down, I’d say that they sound like a mixture of Dragonforce, Ghost, and Avenged Sevenfold. Erik’s voice just has that M. Shadows timber to it. I actually thought he was Robert Stjärnström from Machinae Supremecy for a good two songs. Buuut then I checked and alas, no.
The disk is good. Not great, but it could be. I really liked “Blank Star,” and “My Dilusion,” they’re really good examples of where exactly this band shines – giving us driving beats, interesting keys, and good melody. There’s some good off-beat guitar chugging in “Absolute Power” that lends to the song’s name, actually. Kinda cool.
Unfortunately, like so many melodic bands, I feel like they shoehorned the female singer, Outi, in there. None of the songs feel like they’re made any more prevalent with her added vocals. In fact, in “Absolute Power,” I think having her sing the entire song takes away some of the power it’s trying to convey. Erik’s vocals could’ve done each song just as well, if not better, because it matches the tone of band more.
There’s also a song called “A Quiet One” that would serve itself better by putting it on a completely different album. It sounded an awful lot old Heart’s “Dreamboat Annie”, which is good, but it was REALLY out of place on Mirrors. I also feel that the vocals were mixed a bit dry, but that’s nitpicking.
All in all, like I said, Mirrors is a good disk, but I feel like they can do better. I’ll be really interested in seeing where these guys go from here, because, it’s THERE, however, the execution is wanting. Shoehorned elements and a stalled dynamic make the album difficult to stay interested in. For this, I give Mirrors a 2.5 out of 5.
