BIONATOPS – VOICES (Nefarious Industries)

Before I begin, I will summarize this entire review up in one sentence: Bionatops is as if Mike Patton (Faith No More) and Les Claypool (Primus) did acid, fucked like rabbits, and had a shiny new baby – what the fuck?!?!

Got that? Good, let’s move on.

Bionatops features ex- Caricature everythingist Joe Spiller, and Black Crown Initiate’s Jeff Willet. The two have managed to create a concept album that is both interesting and cathartic. I can’t really do any better than my analogy, because the proof is in the pudding.

Voices is, according to their record label, “a G-rated, family friendly album about a lovable schizophrenic southerner that tells tales of his life that may or may not be true while interacting with other voices in his head that might not even be in his head.”

I like stuff like this because it’s a nice palate cleanser from all the other stuff I get to hear every day. There’s a lot of good metal out there, but every once in a while I come across something so weird that I fall in love with it immediately. It was true when I discovered Faith No More (and hence, everything Mike Patton’s put his name to), and it’s true now. It’s not so much a metal album, as it is a progressive cacophony of weird, and I loves me some weird.

You can glean some insight into this band by simply listening to the track “The Great Pancake Massacre of 1957.” By listening to it, you can sort of draw a map to this guy’s insanity, and then travel there yourself.

And when you’re a metal fan, you can live in that town for a long time, because insanity is a giant huge megalopolis, like Mega City 1 in Judge Dredd.

Go with me on that.

I give this album a 4 out 5, if only because I think Spiller is trying to emulate Patton and Claypool a bit much. I would like to see this project develop a bit more and add its own spin on it. Beyond that, the album fuckin rocks and will be making its way into my car for my night time driving playlist.
