Canadian metal trio WarCall is back at it again with their fresh release InvadersWith their 4th release and one heavily influenced by Sun Tzu’s The Art of War as well as the band’s own unique style of storytelling, aim to craft an album that is as adrenaline inducing as it is thought provoking. Not quite a traditional concept album but definitely running heavy on some central themes. Let’s see what all the ruckus is about, eh?

Right away from the opening riffs and thumping drums there’s no denying the huge influence of 80’s NYC hardcore/punk has on the band when “Mission Commando” gets going. It creates an odd but interesting dynamic as the vocals are much more akin to a band like Lamb of God or Static-X than say FEAR or Black Flag while the reverse is true of the music. The album’s first single “Riding With Zombies” has a heavy rockabilly sound to it and it’s lyrics tell a crazy tale of kick ass shows, too many brews and the crazy shit that typically follows, but obviously with a bit of a twist. It’s a simple track but still has some nice groove to it and anyone who’s ever played a show, been on tour or experienced any part of the “living out of the band van” life will certainly appreciate it. The solo thrown in adds a nice touch of a more classic metal influence and leads them right into kicking things up a notch after. “Bully Bastard” is an odd one, took me a couple of listens to feel it, but it’s a good track – I just have a thing about grown men saying the word “bully” that makes me kinda laugh but in context here the title works in the song. Don’t worry it’s not some crybaby shit, the song is about exploitation of artists/individuals in general and how it’s bullshit so I can dig it much better than Theory of A Deadman‘s take on the subject (yeah, you know what song I mean). The album closing track is also one of the album’s most fire: “Alien Forces” is a perfect way to wrap up this up. It encompasses basically all of the band’s musical stylings and elements into one pummeling track that never feels forced or cluttered, just a good ole’ fashioned ass kicking hard rock/metal tune many will find infectious.

I’ve been known to have a more stern attitude towards the more “meat and potatoes” kinda bands because there are bands who absolutely kill it without any frills and thrills, who in my book are some of the best because they just count on the music to speak for itself and don’t rely on big gimmicks. But then there’s the other side of that coin where it’s some neanderthal dreg that makes you wonder how they ever made it past the college radio level. These guys definitely fall more on the former than the latter and it makes Invaders all the better for it. If you’re looking for a new school band that respects and incorporates old school cool into their sounds almost flawlessly, then you’ll wanna be all over Invaders on October 13th when it is released.
